NASA's Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment

ABoVE

ABoVE Summer Interns

Since 2016 NASA ABoVE has sponsored summer internships either in-person at Goddard Space Flight Center, or virtually, to provide training and research opportunities in Arctic science and remote sensing. Students complete projects designed to meet the science goals and objectives of ABoVE, and which foster collaboration and engagement with team members, local communities, and decision-makers within the study domain. Many interns have been able to present their research at conferences and are working to publish in scientific journals as co-authors.

Miles Moore

Hello! My name is Miles Moore. I am a senior undergraduate at the University of Colorado @ Boulder where I study Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with a minor in GIS and Computational Sciences. I am also privileged to work as a data science research technician at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research on campus. It was here that I developed my passion for using remote sensing and long-term data to study spatiotemporal patterns in tundra vegetation dynamics. Outside of research, I am an avid outdoor rock climber, snowboarder, cyclist, and analog film photographer! My wife and I both love to spend our time off camping and hiking together.

This summer, I am interning with NASA's Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) in the Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems office. My role involves compiling synthetic aperture radar-derived environmental data and corresponding field data from the ABoVE airborne and field campaigns. I will then use this information to construct validation and ground truth models.

Karla Nailea Monroy

Hi! I'm Karla Nailea Monroy, currently pursuing a Master's degree in Urban & Regional Planning at the University of California, Irvine. I grew up in Menifee, a town located in Southern California, where I observed significant urban development throughout the years and its direct effects on the climate. With my spatial analysis skills, I am passionate to empower historically marginalized communities through my work. To enhance my knowledge beyond the traditional scope of my studies, I have delved into indigenous wisdom and tribal climate adaptation, exploring concepts outside of what I have learned in school. Apart from academia and work, some of my hobbies include film photography, reading, hiking, and playing video games.

Michael Howerton

Hi there! My name is Michael Howerton and I'm an intern under Dr. Liz Hoy in the Carbon Cycles and Ecosystems Office. This past May, I graduated from the University of Maryland with a BS in Environmental Science and Policy: Land Use and a minor in Spanish. I'm incredibly interested in the topic of forest resilience and how it's affected by climate change, so being a part of ABoVE, getting to research boreal regions of the continent, is a dream come true. Some of my passions include music and theater, specifically performing Shakespeare. I've acted in five of the Bard's works over the past four years and hope to continue moving forward. Often spotted on Teams calls with me, my cat Phoebe is a recent addition to my family (only got her in May!) and loves to lay across my keyboard. In the fall, I'll begin working toward a Master's in Geographical Sciences at UMD, and would be delighted to find myself back at NASA Goddard after that.
